Safe route around the car

When you are parked up on the side of the road, it’s important that you pick a safe route to exit and enter your vehicle. Make sure that you walk around the side of the car that is closest to oncoming traffic so they can see you clearly. Stepping into traffic when obscured by your car can be potentially dangerous.

Observation before opening car doors

Before you open your door to enter your vehicle, you must observe well so you know that it’s clear. Don’t open your door without checking.

Parking brake applied

When you’re stationary in your car, make sure that your parking brake’s applied so the car is secured.

Neutral

Before you start your car, make sure the gear stick is in neutral. If you try to start your car up in gear, it may jolt forwards, which could cause an accident.
